What is an Uptide?
An Uptider is a specialist rod used in fast flowing water when boat fishing, and as the name suggests, when you’re casting up tide.
What’s the difference between the two new Uptide’s?
Due to the popularity of the MK1, it was clear that we needed two models with the same action. A 90-200 gram rod and a 175-300 gram rod, the main differential being the latter is more powerful and has a greater casting range. The 90-200 gram rod has a fast J Curve tip which means you can use a lighter lead and line/braid to combat the tide.
Lead size recommendation:
- 3-7 oz (90-200 gram)
- 6-10 oz (175-300 gram)
Why has it taken us so long?
As with all of our rods, the development stage takes as long as it takes. There’s only so much you can do on paper. The rest requires our rod testers getting their hands dirty. Sampling is a process of tweaking, changing and eliminating to get to our end product.
Depending on the venue: the depths of water, tides/currents, type of ground and even lead sizes are all very different. From South Devon to the Bristol Channel and The Isle of Wight we were putting the rods through their paces in contrasting tidal flows, for feedback on any adjustments needed. We completed our final test in Norway. These rods aren’t designed for these sorts of trips but if it can cope with a large Halibut under the boat, it’s going to be able to manage anything in the UK waters.
